Lt. Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen) is given responsibility for protecting an important witness due to testify at a Senate hearing investigating organized crime. When the witness is murdered before he can appear, federal prosecutor Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn) places the blame squarely on Bullitt.

Refusing to accept the situation at face value, Bullitt launches his own investigation to identify the gunmen and uncover the criminal operation behind the killing. As he follows the evidence, however, the case becomes increasingly complicated. Secrets begin to surface, nothing appears quite as straightforward as it first seemed, and Bullitt soon finds himself in the killers' sights.

Directed by Peter Yates, Bullitt became a defining action thriller and features one of cinema's most celebrated car chases. Its gritty realism, restrained style and groundbreaking approach to action filmmaking helped shape the genre for decades, influencing filmmakers including Walter Hill (The Driver), Michael Mann (Heat), Quentin Tarantino (Death Proof) and Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher).
