Infused with a contemporary feminist perspective, Portrait of a Lady on Fire made history in 2019 as the first film directed by a woman to receive the Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Céline Sciamma’s acclaimed romantic drama has since established itself as a modern classic.

Set on a remote island in Brittany in the late 18th century, the story follows Marianne (Noémie Merlant), a painter hired by a wealthy countess to secretly create a wedding portrait of her independent daughter, Héloïse (Adèle Haenel). Intended to secure Héloïse a prosperous marriage, the assignment gradually develops into something far more intimate and unexpected.
